第8帖「花宴(はなのえん)」」

あらすじ
　光源氏は二十歳(はたち)。春爛漫の2月20日すぎ、内裏で桜の宴がとり行われ、光源氏は漢詩や舞に際立った才を見せて讃嘆されます。宴の後、ほろ酔い加減の彼は弘徽殿(こきでん)に忍び込み、暗がりの中「朧月夜に似るものぞなき」と口づさみながらやってきた女君をとらえて一夜の契りをかわします。
　女君は弘徽殿女御の家族のようです。一か月後、光源氏は弘徽殿女御の父・右大臣邸での藤の宴に招かれ、酔った振りをしてあの女君を探し当て手をとらえます。彼女は右大臣の六女で、4月には東宮（皇太子）への入内が決まっていました。光源氏にとっては政敵の娘にして兄の婚約者でもある朧月夜の君。激しくも危険な恋の始まりでした。

場面1
　光源氏と朧月夜の出会いの場面。こともあろうに光源氏は政治的敵対勢力である弘徽殿女御の御殿に忍び込み、かわいい声の姫君に出会います。光源氏の恋の王者のような振る舞いと言葉に注目です。

場面2
　朧月夜が右大臣の娘だと当たりを付けた光源氏が一か月後に右大臣家で催された藤の花の宴にやって来た場面。右大臣家は藤原氏で、姓の藤にちなんで邸宅に藤の木を植えており花盛りに宴席を設けたのです。帝の息子ならではのカジュアルな直衣姿で光源氏は乗り込みます。

Chapter 8: “Hana no En”

Summary
　In this chapter, Hikaru Genji is 20 years old. Past the date of February 20, when spring is in full bloom, a cherry blossom banquet is held at the imperial palace, and Genji is praised for his outstanding talent in Chinese poetry and dance. After the banquet, a slightly drunk Genji sneaks into the ladies’ pavilion. In the darkness, he encounters a woman who recites a poem stating, in essence, that there is nothing like a night with a hazy moon. They engage in a one-night tryst.
　Genji guesses that she is a relative of Lady Kokiden. A month later, Genji is invited to a wisteria banquet at the residence of Lady Kokiden’s father, the Minister of the Right. At the banquet, Genji feigns drunkenness and seeks out the woman from the previous banquet, taking her hand. She is the sixth daughter of the Minister of the Right and is scheduled to be married to the crown prince in April. For Hikaru Genji, the woman, known as Oborozukiyo, is the daughter of his political enemy and is also the fiancée of his older brother, Crown Prince Suzaku. It is the beginning of an intense and dangerous love affair.

Excerpted Scene 1
　Genji and Oborozukiyo meet. Of all things, Genji sneaks into the residence of Lady Kokiden, a political adversary, and there encounters a young noblewoman with a charming voice. Note the behavior and speech of Genji, ever the maestro of the heart.

Excerpted Scene 2
　Genji, having guessed that Oborozukiyo is one of the daughters of the Minister of the Right, attends the wisteria banquet held at the Minister of the Right’s estate one month later. The Minister of the Right and his family are of the Fujiwara clan, a name which contains the character for “wisteria.” In honor of this, wisteria have been planted around the estate and the banquet is held when their flowers are in full bloom. Genji arrives dressed in a casual noshi robe, something only someone like he, a son of the emperor, could wear to such an event.
