第3帖「空蝉」

あらすじ
　前帖から続きの物語です。空蝉を忘れることができない光源氏は、三度(みたび)、紀伊守(きのかみ)邸を訪れました。空蝉は夫の先妻の娘と囲碁をしており初めて彼女の姿を灯りのもとで見ます。決して美しくはありませんが、そのたしなみに光源氏はますます思いを強くします。
　夜、光源氏は寝所に忍び込みました。先ほどの娘と二人で眠っていた空蝉は、気配を察するや部屋から滑り出ました。光源氏は娘に近づき人違いと気づきつつ契ってしまいます。
　光源氏は空蝉の脱いだ薄衣(うすぎぬ)を持ち出し歌を詠んで贈ります。空蝉は抑えていた思いを募らせますが、身の程を考えれば人知れず泣くしかありません。
 
場面1
　光源氏が紀伊守邸を訪れ空蝉が先妻の娘と仲良く碁を打っている様子を覗き見する場面。空蝉の振る舞いに惹かれますが、空蝉とは対照的に派手な顔立ちの娘にも目を付けます。
 
場面2
　光源氏は寝所に忍び込みますが、空蝉は気がついて逃げ出し、そこに残ったのは碁の相手の娘でした。光源氏は帰宅しても空蝉の事が忘れられず彼女を思う気持ちを和歌にしたため贈ります。

Chapter 3: “Utsusemi”

Summary
　This is a continuation of the story from the previous chapter. Unable to forget Utsusemi, Hikaru Genji returns to visit the Kinokami estate for a third time. Utsusemi is playing a game of go with the adult daughter of her husband’s late wife and Genji sees her under the light for the first time. Although not beautiful, her grace and refinement further strengthen Genji’s desire for the woman.
　At night, Genji creeps into Utsusemi’s bedroom. Utsusemi is asleep together with the aforementioned daughter, but becomes aware of Genji and slips out of the room. Genji approaches the daughter and, while realizing that he is with the wrong woman, sleeps with her.
　Genji leaves and takes with him the thin robe that Utsusemi had left behind in the room, later giving it back to her with a poem. Utsusemi’s suppressed feelings for Genji grow, but, considering her standing, all she can do is weep in secret.
 
Excerpted Scene 1
　Genji visits the Kinokami estate and peeks in on Utsusemi playing a friendly game of go with the adult daughter of her husband’s late wife. He is attracted to Utsusemi’s comportment, but he also takes notice of the daughter, who, in contrast to Utsusemi, has a face that is much more eye-catching.
 
Excerpted Scene 2
　At night, Genji creeps into Utsusemi’s bedroom. Utsusemi, however, notices and runs away, leaving the daughter with whom she had played go earlier in the day alone with Genji. Genji returns home, but unable to get Utsusemi out of his mind, writes a waka poem about his feelings which he then sends to her.
