第7帖「紅葉賀(もみじのが)」

あらすじ
　光源氏18歳の10月、朱雀院への行幸を前に清涼殿で試楽(しがく)（リハーサル）が催されました。光源氏は頭中将と青海波(せいがいは)を舞い絶賛を浴びます。光源氏との不義の子を宿している藤壺は、何も知らず称賛する桐壷帝に対して言葉少なにしか応対できないのでした。
　翌年2月、藤壺は出産します。生まれた男の子は光源氏にそっくりでした。この子を我が子と信じて疑わない桐壷帝は皇子(おうじ)を光源氏に見せます。光源氏の心を様々な感情がよぎります。
　この頃、光源氏は、好奇心から57、8歳の内裏女房・源典侍(げんのないしのすけ)と関係を持ちました。光源氏に対抗心を抱く頭中将は、またも恋のライバルとなりますが、本気ではなく戯れ合う光源氏と頭中将でした。
　藤壺は7月に中宮となります。天皇の正妻でキサキの中で最高にして別格の地位です。ますます遠くなる彼女に光源氏は切なさを増すばかりでした。
 
場面1
　この帖の冒頭の場面、試楽で「青海波」を舞う光源氏の息をのむような美しさ。『源氏物語』の中で最も光源氏が美しく描かれている名場面です。藤壺に見てほしい一心で舞う源氏、息子を愛する帝、罪の意識を抱きつつ見守る藤壺、三人の心を想像しながらお聴きください。
 
場面2
　藤壺が皇子を産み桐壺帝がその子を光源氏に見せる場面。映画化された源氏物語などでは必ず取り上げられる名場面です。光源氏の心理に注目してください。

Chapter 7: “Momiji no Ga”

Summary
　In the October of Hikaru Genji’s 18 year, Genji takes part in a dance rehearsal at the Seiryoden prior to an imperial visit to the Suzaku-in. Genji and To no Chujo perform their dance, “Blue Waves,” to great acclaim. Fujitsubo, who is carrying Genji’s child after their secret tryst unbeknownst to the emperor, can only respond to Emperor Kiritsubo’s praise for the dance with a few sparse words.
　In February of the following year, Fujitsubo gives birth. The boy looks exactly like Genji. Emperor Kiritsubo, who does not doubt the child to be his own son, shows the prince to Genji. Genji experiences a variety of emotions.
　Around this time, Genji’s curiosity leads him to become involved with the 57- to 58-year-old court lady Gen no Naishi. To no Chujo, ever-eager to compete with Genji, again becomes Genji’s rival in love, but neither is serious and they jokingly battle for the woman’s affections.
　In July, Fujitsubo is made the empress. She is now the emperor’s official wife and holds the highest and most exceptional position among the emperor’s consorts. As she becomes a more and more distant figure, Genji’s heartache only grows.
 
Excerpted Scene 1
　In the opening scene of this chapter, the beauty of Genji’s “Blue Waves” dance at the rehearsal is breathtaking. This is a famous scene in The Tale of Genji and is the most beautiful depiction of Hikaru Genji in the story. As you listen to the reading of Genji’s performance, imagine how the three characters feel: Genji, who is dancing solely with the desire that Fujitsubo watch him; the emperor, who loves his son; and Fujitsubo, who watches Genji with a guilty conscience.
 
Excerpted Scene 2
　Fujitsubo gives birth to the prince and Emperor Kiritsubo shows the child to Genji. This is a famous scene that is always included in film adaptations of The Tale of Genji. Pay special attention to Genji’s state of mind.
