第4帖「夕顔」②

あらすじ
　変死した夕顔の遺体を秘密裏に東山の寺に運び荼毘に付したものの、源氏の君は恐怖と悲しみに打ちひしがれました。のちに夕顔の侍女に聞いたところ、夕顔は光源氏の悪友である頭中将の元愛人で子もなしていたのですが、頭中将の妻の仕打ちを逃れて仮住まいをしていたのでした。年齢は19歳だったということでした。源氏の君は夕顔の四十九日の法要を営みました。
　一方、空蝉は夫に随い伊予に下るということです。源氏の君は彼女の寝所から持ち帰った小袿(こうちぎ)を返しました。そして、夏から秋にかけて空蝉と夕顔と交わした二つの恋を、しみじみと思い返すのでした。
 
場面1
　深い森、吹き渡る風、フクロウの声、動かない夕顔を抱きながら源氏の君が途方に暮れる場面。
 
場面2
　源氏の君は夕顔の顔をもう一度見たいと、憔悴しながら夕顔の通夜に出かけます。僧の読経に涙があふれ、夕顔の手を取り号泣します。
 
場面3
　源氏の君は帰宅後重病となり、ひと月後にようやく回復しましたが、ともすれば声をあげて泣く日々でした。夕顔の女房・右近と話すことで心を癒しました。なぜ夕顔は素性を隠していたのか右近が答えます。

Chapter 4: “Yugao” II

Summary
　After bringing Yugao’s body in secret to a temple in Higashiyama to be cremated, Genji is overcome with fear and grief. Later, Genji learns from Yugao’s maid, Ukon, that Yugao was a former lover of one of Genji’s playboy friends, To no Chujo, and that she had a child with him, but was living in a temporary residence to escape retaliation by To no Chujo’s wife. She was just 19 years old. Genji conducts a Buddhist memorial service for Yugao on the 49th day after her death./span>
　Meanwhile, Utsusemi accompanies her husband to Iyo. Genji returns to Utsusemi one of her kochiki robes he had taken with him after spending a night together. Genji then reflects deeply on the two loves he had shared with Utsusemi and Yugao from the summer through the fall.
 
Excerpted Scene 1
　As wind blows through the deep forest and an owl calls out into the night, Genji, clutching Yugao’s inert body, is at a loss.
 
Excerpted Scene 2
　Desiring to see Yugao’s face one more time, a haggard Genji sets out to attend the traditional night-long vigil being held for her. Listening to the monk chanting the sutras, tears well up in Genji’s eyes. He takes Yugao’s hand and weeps.
 
Excerpted Scene 3
　After returning home, Genji becomes seriously ill. He finally recovers a month later, but spends his days sobbing audibly. Speaking with Ukon, Yugao’s maid, is soothing to Genji. Ukon tells Genji why Yugao hid her identity.
