第4帖「夕顔」①

あらすじ
　「夕顔」は２回に分けてお伝えします。光源氏の君17歳の夏、庶民の住む五条界隈で夕顔が咲く家に暮らす謎の女君に出会いました。光源氏は正体を隠し女君も名を語らないままに深い仲となり逢瀬を重ねます。この時、源氏の君は六条辺りに住む高貴な女性と長い付き合いとなっていましたが、執着心の激しい彼女をもてあまし気味でした。夕顔の宿の女は、はかなげでほとんど自己主張をせず君には可愛く思えてなりません。
　源氏の君は彼女を近くの「なにがしの院」に連れ出し二人だけの時間を過ごしました。その夜更け、枕元に変化(へんげ)の女が現れて怨みの言葉を口にしたのです。隣の女は意識を失っていて源氏の君は助けを呼びますが、女君は亡くなってしまいました。
 
場面1
　光源氏が乳母の見舞いにお忍びで庶民の住む五条界隈を訪れ、小さな家とその垣根に咲くユウガオに目をとめます。
 
場面2
　源氏の君は夕顔とその侍女を連れて近くの某(なにがし)の院にやってきました。二人だけの時間を思う存分過ごして少しうとうとした時のことでした。女の声がして目を覚ますと、夕顔は意識がなく体はどんどん冷たくなるばかりです。

Chapter 4: “Yugao” I

Summary
　For the purposes of this program, the fourth chapter, “Yugao,” is covered in two parts. In the summer of his 17th year, Hikaru Genji meets a mysterious woman living in a house at which bloom the flowers of the bottle gourd, known as yugao in Japanese, in the Gojo area where commoners live. Genji hides his true identity. The woman also does not reveal her name. They become close and they share many trysts. At this time, Genji has been in a long relationship with a noble lady living in the Rokujo area, called Lady Rokujo, but Genji finds her attachment to him to be a little too intense. The woman of the house of bottle gourd flowers—referred to as Yugao—is delicate and does not assert herself, qualities that Genji can’t help but find charming.
　Genji takes her to a nearby residence, the Nanigashi-no-in, to spend some time alone with her. Later that night, the apparition of a woman appears beside their bed, uttering words of hatred and resentment. Genji finds that Yugao, lying next to him, is unconscious. Genji calls for help, but she has passed away.
 
Excerpted Scene 1
　Genji, on his way to pay a sympathy call to his ill former wet nurse incognito, visits the Gojo neighborhood, where commoners live. He notices a small house and the bottle gourd flowers blooming on its hedge.
 
Excerpted Scene 2
　Genji brings Yugao and her maid, Ukon, to a nearby residence. Genji and Yugao enjoy each other’s company deep into the night. Later, as Genji is nodding off, he is awoken by the voice of a woman and notices that Yugao is unconscious and her body is growing cold.
