第2帖「帚木」

あらすじ
　光源氏17歳、人妻の空蝉との一夜の逢瀬が描かれます。左大臣の娘・葵上(あおいのうえ)と結婚して5年になるものの夫婦仲は疎遠です。そんな彼は梅雨の長雨の夜、悪友たちの話す女の品定めで「中流の女性こそ魅力的」と吹き込まれて興味をかきたてられます。
　折しも「方違(かたたが)え」の風習で中流貴族の邸宅に泊った光源氏は人妻の空蝉(うつせみ)と一夜の契りを結びます。光源氏は高い矜持を持った彼女に心奪われてしまい再びの逢瀬を図ろうとしますが、空蝉は応じず光源氏は悶々とするばかりでした。
 
場面1
　光る源氏という名前から始まる冒頭部分と紀伊守(きのかみ)邸で隣の部屋に忍び込み人妻である空蝉を抱き上げて盗み出す場面です。
 
場面2
　光源氏は寝床で空蝉を真剣に口説きますが、空蝉は軽く扱われるのは許せないと抵抗します。が…ついに。

Chapter 2: “Hahakigi”

Summary
　This chapter depicts Hikaru Genji’s one-night encounter with a married woman, Utsusemi, at the age of 17. He has been married for five years to Aoi, the daughter of the Minister of the Left, but the couple is estranged. His interest is piqued on a long rainy season night when he is told that “middle-class women are the most attractive” by his playboy friends in their talk about women.
　The following evening, Hikaru Genji happens to stay at the residence of a middle-class aristocrat in accordance with the custom of “katatagae” in order to avoid travelling in an unlucky direction, and engages in a one-night tryst with Utsusemi, the second wife of the aristocrat’s father. Genji is so captivated by her pride and self-respect that he tries to have another encounter with her, but Utsusemi does not respond, leaving Genji in agony.
 
Excerpted Scene 1
　The chapter opens with Genji explicitly being referred to as “shining Genji.” Genji sneaks into the next room at the Kinokami estate, quite literally picks up the married woman Utsusemi, and steals her away.
 
Excerpted Scene 2
　In his bed, Genji puts great effort into his overtures to Utsusemi, but she resists, saying that she will not allow herself to be treated so lightly. In the end, however…
